PostSubject: Anyone know anything about bikes?   Wed Apr 13, 2011 4:37 am

Right, I'm considering buying a bike so I can cycle to work. I need it to be something decent that would last say 3-4 years of abuse, but I'm not really too sure how much I should spend.

My maximum budget is really around the £1,000 mark. This includes helmets etc. I litteraly know nothing about bikes, would I really notice the difference between say a £500 and a £1,000 bike? My worry is is that if I got a cheaper bike, I might be wanting a better one in a years time. I don;t really know the difference between short syspension or long syspension or if a 'hardtail' would be better suited. Will primarily be used for commuting to work.

how far away is your work? what sort of ride is it?
does it involve going thru a monsterous dirt track with 15ft ramps and trees everywhere?

or is it a nice cycle down a country lane?

we need to know this before we discuss

if we dnt know, it wud be like buying a ac cobra to go offroading and vice versa!

Well, not really sure, lol! The route is basicly a cycle track, so pretty smooth with abit of a gravely/ pot holed lane leading up to it. Nothing majour really.

I deffo need something that will be ok up/ down kerbs and possibly be used for off-roading on some of the cycle tracks in woodlands around swansea. Thats pretty off road, but I won't be doing any mental jumps or anything, but might join a few peeps from work when they head out.

Can't I just increase the resistance some more??? What worries me about a hardtail is how it will be if I use it off road.

There is a guy in work who'se cycling 23 miles into work each way, and he's pretty tubby and hasnt cycled for like a year so I'm quite impressed! If he can do it, should deffo be able to do the reduced distance!

yeah, hardtail would be my choice aswell, never been a massive fan on full suspension bikes, they seem to use H/T on offrading/trialling so must be good

Kona, Sacracen, im sure theres more makes lol

i would get a hardtail mountain bike because full sus will like charnock said soak your energy and with that budget you couldget it with front sus with lock out (means you can lock the front suspension so that it turns hard to stop the front suspension doing the same when you are riding a road section)

out of the two you listed id go for the kona, solely for the name 'Oh yeah, a Tanuki is a mythical Japanese creature with giant nuts.'

but in all seriousness out of the two you listed id go for the kona as it much better build quiality and much better parts, yes the monoose has locking suspension but tbh i dont think itl make any differance unless your pumping up hills

you ask if price differances will be noticed...imo yes, with mountain bikes, like alot of things, you get what you pay for, as they are more than a frame with wheels, the more you pay the better the componants are etc

I wouldn't spend more than £100 on any bike, I'v had mine for years and hav'nt done a thing to it, got it from the local paper for £30.

lol my last bike i spent £1200+ in parts alone! haha

but in all honisty 8 miles twice a day will put alot of wear on a bike, and you will want something comfy or you wont stick with it so a bike that can be found <£100 will hardly last for its intended use

Tombomb is write

If you want a bike to ride 8 miles to work on, 16 miles a day you definetly want a good one. 1,000 will buy you a bike to suit what you need. Bearings will wearout, chains snap and cassettes slip but these are all consumables.

My choice would be a hardtail without question. A full sus will add wieght, and decrease your efficancy both through the travel, wieght and in some cases most importantly the geometry. Geometry is something often well over looked.

Now the question is what hardtail, id 100% say an XC hardtail but there is a large range in travel from 100mm to as much as 150mm (150mm is more freeride but ye...) What tracks are you planning on doing in swansea? if its kilvey id get a bike with adjustable travel (adjustable without taking apart) if its just clyne perhaps go for 100mm fork.

So in summary you want hardtail with forks that allow 100m travel and lock off allowing them to become rigid. adjustable compression would be a bonus but these extras maybe at the cost of quality drive line components and a light efficant frame.

Look out for shimano SLX, deore or XT (XTR is expensive) or scramX-7, X-9 and X-0. In the driveline department.

Full Bike wise look at specailized and trek first, go to wheelies, tredz and the bike hub. Ill have a look now for exact bikes. There are alot of bike companies out there, more than are car companys selling in the uk perhaps.

Long post, but as Ive spent about £6000 on bikes in 6 years I feel id like to help Razz

Cheers all for comments. Cheers evoman for the link and your detailed response.

Another very basic question, how do I know what wheel diameter to get? Seems to be a few options, is it mostly dependant on my height?

The place in swansea is Afarn Argoed? Intention is that if I can improve my fitness in say 2yrs time I'll pop up there with a few peeps from work.

Regarding money side of things, work does a really good deal on a bike to work scheme, so I save over 40% on the cost of the bike, and as it comes out of my wage each month its not a huge hit (I'm getting a company phone soon so that basicaly pays for a decent bike), but I need the bike for 4 years and that when I can get another one.

Cheers. Having spoken to someone in work I'm now considering two bikes, one for me, one for the Mrs, but of course this means the budget will be around £500. Will have a word with the Mrs and see if shes interested.

I did this with my gf... I asked her if shed actualy keep riding it rather than just go out once or twice and get bored, and she promised me she wanted to go bike riding. It lasted like a month and then she never bothered again. not that I can say much, I did exactly the same lol.

£500 won't buy you a bike that will last 4 years, be good enough to use everyday and for some weekend riding. Keep to your orginal budget.

tom you had cubes before?
