| That would cost much more than buying an mx5 and would never handle as well as the original car / an mx5 | |

| Handle as well as the original car? Wouldn't be too sure about that, and sod the money, look at the car you'd end up with! | |

| would need to put the car on a jig, cut down the middle and raise the tunnel up, not an easy undertaking at all.

| Disn't say it was easy, you could just cut a gearbox tunnel out of a rwd car, (mk2 escort ZF tunnel would do as they are very large and easy to get hold of and not that expensive to but either), and there's your problem nearly solved. S2000 rear axle complete, may need to mock up new monting points for rear suspension etc, but its doable. | |

| My guess is that he wants either an accord or an mx5, not a rear wheel drive accord that would probably handle pants and never be worth the amount of money it would cost to convert it | |

| this is true micky, i would like one or the other or id most liely have got a bwm or similar, accord is now officially for sale, bad times, took some doing to get myself to list it online but hey its done now so just see what happens. Accord is a brilliant car cannot be faulted just after something a bit different thats all. | |

| You want something different and rwd? Mk2 escort, the dogs bollocks, cheap as chips to maintain/modifiy, (unless you build it into a full on rally car), can't be beaten in terms of cool, you know you want to. | |

| yeah, but in terms of an everyday pratcial car that i can rely on its not really going to fill the post, it would be cool but not as a daily. | |

| mk2 escorts are not the dogs bollocks. They look great in events and seem to make everyone nostalgic, but there scene taxed to death and in a way not that interesting and fun imo. Certainly not "different" either.
You could get so many other things for way less and have a lot more fun in them, Maybe even an e36m3 for the price you could get for the accord. You willing to go old school matt?

| Thats spe! That one is the dogs bollocks (try keeping up with it) has a dry sump 2.4 pinto and proflex suspension, on a back road you find much that could keep up with it (especially if you can really driver it like the owner and his son), (maybe a couple of the other ones like meirion or lwni's but you'd struggle). I don't think they are in a scene at all, not like the Vw boys are (besides, even if they are, its performance based unlike most), its just there are things on them that work well, like bilsteins, minilights and so on, its a formula that works, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And you've only photographed the top 10 here, there were loads of other cars out. | |

| Hang on a minute, you photographed a rally, of course the majoritiy of cars will be mk2's, they make good rally cars, go to a car show like modded nats and I bet you'll hardly see any. http://www.bg-photosport.co.uk/rali_bro_caron_2011.htm And there's your proof that there are plenty of other cars than mk2s that go rallying. Rallying is rallying, its a competition, like drifiting where most cars are nissan silvias etc. its not a scene, its common sense to use said cars, the same as porsches and m3s are common to track days. Thats why there were loads there. | |

| no scene? tell that to the people who have them stored in their garage just to see daylight once a year with polished 'bays, lots of power and shiney bits, minilights etc and rarely see a road, saw plenty when i judged at fordfair, too many for my liking. So ye loads the same = a scene | |

| Except for me that is, people who hev them stored in garages to only see daylight once a year is sad, no matter what scene you are in, which is why I'm into the rallying where they are out on a regular basis, you may have seen a lot at the same time at ford fair Tom, but trust me, thats probalby the only time you ever will, take into account the other 364 days of the year, you'll see bugger all, even travelling to college and back I've came accross Vw scene cars regularly (you know, heavily lowered, wide wheels etc). I'd rather be in a mk2 scene than most, but thats just my opinion. | |

| I was trying to make out that there aren't many around here, other than competition cars, not that they are garaged for every day of the year (whilst I recognize some are, most aren't), (being a member of a few ford forums, I can assure you there are plenty that get driven on a regular basis) unlike vw type scene car which are as common as muck | |

| If you go to a rally, there must be at least 50% of people there that are Mk2 salesmen, because they deny the existence of any other rally car, and will sing the praises of mk2s whether you want to hear it or not.
Theres plenty of other scenes... like the dub scene... but at least they might talk about 5 different marks of golf, same with polos, beetle, camper van, passat, bora or probably even an audi.
And like you said about the jap/drift scene earlier in the thread - therse loads of different brands, and loads of different models of each brand. Not just mk2 escort 2 door and 4 door.

| Except mk2's do make great road rally cars (for stages you better off with a subaru or evo, unless you want to go to historics, and if you got to really early historics, you need a porsche), you have to realise there are rules and regulations in road rallies (and stage rallies but thats for another time), and the rules for road rallies are so strict that cgenerally an escort does make the best car, for exapmle, you can't use individual throttle bodies, plenty of engine really benefit from that and would therefore probably make better rally cars, but they ain't allowed, so that that done. Forced induction isn't allowed (so there goes your impreza and evo's), whilst 4wd is permitted, it saps a lot of power throught transmission losses, so its arguable whether the extra traction you get outways the power loss, (and besides, only if its very wet will 4wd really benefit, see classic tracks results), so thats a load of cars you can no longer use. Also, you can't have a car with more than 4 cylinders, which counts out a lot of stuff like bmw's and sierra xr4x4s (which were popular until the rules changed), so you can start to see how the escort id one of the best, a pinto engine may be heavy, but they can produce very good torque figures (especially with a stroker kit fitted), so they pull out of slow corners and junctions very well, as well as this, even with only 2 carb chokes, they can produce 220bhp plus, not many engines will do that without the aid of throttle bodies or forced induction, there may be the honda s2000 engine which is occasionaly used, but the vtec doesn't come in till 6k (making it pretty much useless) and thats before you lookat the relatively poor torque figure, (there was a rally on not so long ago at epynt, and there was a mk2 out with a vtec, it had to come down a gear or 2 on nearly every hill). So what other cars can you use, the astra gte is still quite popular, but you won't get much more than 200bhp out of it, or the 306 gti6 which is very good, a potential winner, but there aren't as many specialists around (although I will give that it hasn't been around anywhere near as the escort). Reian does well in an ibiza, but he has too push real hard to match the times set by the mk2 boys. there's also the sierra (but it seems everyone who's driven them describes them as tanks), so now you can see that there ain't much that can rival a good mk2, besides, by the time you've taken every rule into account, there ain't as many rear wheel drive cars (sa in interview with daniel "lwni", said he loves the fun of rwd) so people think they are more fun to drive. They are the reasons why mk2s are generally prefered, and me, well I like them cause generally the nutters in masters class drive em, and its hell of an inspiring thing to see one being driven properly, with theback end hanging out without loosing any time or speed. | |
